Info about The St. Andrew's Society of Winnipeg Trust Fund and The St. Andrew's Society of Winnipeg Endowment Fund - An Agency Fund of The Winnipeg Foundation

This Fund for charitable purposes was effectively established March 1, 1980. The Fund is officially administered under the title of "The St. Andrew's Society of Winnipeg Trust Fund." The Trust Fund is operated in accordance with its Trust Deed and is completely independent of the Society and the Board.

 

Purpose

The purpose of The St. Andrew's Society of Winnipeg Trust Fund is stated in the Trust Deed as follows:

"All subscriptions and donations made and given to the said Trust, shall be held upon trust and the same shall be applied at the direction of the Committee for the purpose of enabling the general public in Canada, and more specifically in Manitoba to:

 

a)   provide assistance for bagpipe bands to participate in activities sponsored by the Fund;
b)   encourage scholarly research and writing as it relates to Scottish involvement in the history of Canada;
c)   encourage activities that relate to the preservation, encouragement and augmentation of Scottish culture in Canada; and
d)   to engage in any other activities of Scottish Canadian identity that are permitted by a registered charitable organization, within the meaning of the Income Tax Act."

 

Operation

The Trust Fund derives support from financial donations, bequests and fund raising events from St. Andrew's Society activities. All capital in the Trust Find is invested in secure holdings. The Trustees of the Trust Fund are the St. Andrew's Society President and Vice President. They, acting only upon direction from the Trust Fund Committee of Management, have full responsibility for the custody and investment of all subscriptions and donations. The Society and the Board of Managers have no authority over the divestiture of the proceeds of The St. Andrew's Society of Winnipeg Trust Fund. The Board may at its discretion appeal to the Trust Fund Committee of Management for favourable consideration and distribution of the Fund's resources. Donations to the Trust Fund are treated under the Income Tax Act as charitable donations.

 

The St. Andrew's Society of Winnipeg Endowment Fund - An Agency Fund of The Winnipeg Foundation

In January 2009 The St. Andrew's Society of Winnipeg Trust Fund, in agreement with the Society and The Winnipeg Foundation, established  "The St. Andrew's Society of Winnipeg Endowment Fund" as an Agency Fund of The Winnipeg Foundation. Made up of contributions from the Society, the Trust Fund, and the general public, all contributions to the Endowment Fund are irrevocable and are held and invested in perpetuity by The Winnipeg Foundation for the purpose of generating annual grant making activity to be used at the discretion of the Trustees of The St. Andrew's Society of Winnipeg Trust Fund  in accordance with the provisions of the Trust Deed of The St. Andrew's Society of Winnipeg Trust Fund. Donations to "The St. Andrew's Society of Winnipeg Endowment Fund" of The Winnipeg Foundation are treated under the Income Tax Act as charitable donations. The Winnipeg Foundation is Canada’s first community foundation, established in 1921 by William Forbes Alloway. Today the Foundation manages more than 2,500 endowment funds. Throughout the Foundation's history, it has played an important role in Winnipeg's community life.
